If there's one thing I've learnt from both life and spirit, it's that change doesn't ask for permission. It arrives on its own schedule, often when we least expect it, and rarely in the form we would have chosen.
I've sat across from so many beautiful souls who have been blindsided by change – a sudden job loss, a relationship ending, a health scare, a move they never planned for. And the question that comes up again and again is: how do I find hope when the ground beneath me has shifted?
The truth is, hope isn't something we find. It's something we cultivate. Like a seed planted in dark soil, it needs time and patience and a little bit of faith that something is growing even when we can't see it yet.
When unforeseen change hits, our first instinct is to try to get back to where we were. We want the familiar. We want what we had planned. But spirit has taught me that sometimes the detour is the actual path. What feels like a wrong turn is actually a redirection towards something more aligned with who we're becoming.
I think of my own pivot – originally from Australia, then building a life in Canada, and eventually leaving everything I knew to start fresh in Washington, DC. It wasn't in my plan. But looking back, I can see how every twist and turn led me to exactly where I needed to be. The clients I've met here, the connections, the growth – none of it would have happened if I'd stayed on my original path.
If you're standing at a crossroads right now, feeling uncertain and maybe a little afraid, here are a few things that have helped me and that spirit consistently reminds me of:
First, allow yourself to grieve what was. You can't move forward authentically if you're pretending the loss doesn't hurt. Honour it. Feel it. Then gently begin to release it.
Second, get curious instead of anxious. Instead of asking 'why is this happening to me?' try asking 'what is this making space for?' That shift in perspective can open doors you didn't even know existed.
Third, lean on your people. Whether it's friends, family, a spiritual community, or even spirit itself – you don't have to navigate this alone. We are not designed to carry heavy loads in isolation.
And finally, remember that every ending contains a beginning. It's easy to forget that when you're standing in the rubble, but the rubble is also fertile ground. New things can grow here.
Change is rarely comfortable, but it is almost always purposeful. Trust that the universe is rearranging things in your favour, even when it doesn't look that way yet. Hope is still here. It's just waiting for you to let it in.
